HOUSE TO HOUSE COUPLE EDUCATION AS AN APPROACH TO INCREASE THE KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF FAMILY PLANNING AMONG NON-PRACTICING COUPLES OF REPRODUCTIVE AGE IN BARANGAY UPPER SALUG DAKU, MAHAYAG, ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR

This study was designed to determine the effect of house to house couple education on the knowledge and practice of family planning among nonpracticing couples from Barangay Upper Salug Daku, Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur. The objective of this study was to improve the knowledge of couples on family planning which will eventually make them decide to utilize any forms of family planning method. A total of 30 couples in their reproductive age were included in this study. An interviewer-assisted questionnaire was used to determine the knowledge and practice of the respondents before and after the intervention. A lecture was given by a registered midwife together with the researcher to the couples included in this study. Following statistical analysis using paired T-test to compare the means of knowledge scores of the respondents before and after the intervention, data have showed that there was a significant increase in the knowledge after the intervention. In addition, frequencies and percentages were used to compare the practice before and after the intervention. For the practice, there were 73 % (22 out of the 30 couples) who utilized family planning method after the intervention, most common family planning method use were pills, calendar method and withdrawal. Therefore, the researcher concludes that house to house couple family planning education is effective in improving the knowledge and practice of nonpracticing couples towards family planning.
