Hyposol and solar water disinfection (SODIS) are cheap, easy, and effective household water treatment methods. This study focused on the effective promotion of hyposol and SODIS. A quasi-experimental field study was done to compare house-to-house promotion and group lecture among rural households. A series of group lectures was done in Barangay Boniao while house-to-house promotion using community promoters was conducted in Barangay Kaangayan. Randomly selected households were surveyed over the course of two months after each promotional campaign. Indicators of effectiveness were (1) awareness and communication channels, (2) utilization, and (3) intention. The results showed that both promotional strategies had a positive impact on the promotion of hyposol and SODIS. Although all respondents knew about hyposol and SODIS at the end of the study, the results of communication channels, showed that house-to-house promotion reached more people. Achieving 100% in the Barangay Boniao were noted to be caused by the interpersonal communication by interviewers. House-to-house promotion had a better impact on the utilization of SODIS. However, there was no significant difference between the two strategies in the utilization of hyposol. Group lectures seem to be more effective to enforced positive intention to use hyposol and SODIS, as intention increased over the course of time in Barangay Boniao. The group lecture was easier and cheaper to conduct, yet did not effective reached more people. House-to-house promotion reached most residents and persuaded more people to use SODIS, however, they are costly and needs great efforts to realize.
