2011-11-09 00:55:28

Three Level III students of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine (AdZU-SOM) have been chosen to present their paper on innovative ways of medical education on December 2-3, 2011 at the University of Hongkong, Hongkong.

Ellery Ivan E. Apolinario, Caroline C. Fabian and Eduard Basille M. Remegia will join other medical student delegates and doctors from the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada and all over Asia for the “Frontiers in Medical and Health Sciences Education: Holistic Approach in Medical and Health Sciences Education HKU 2011 Conference.” Distinguished international speakers will explore Educational Approaches in the Medical and Health Sciences, Elective/Special Study Module, Humanities/Ethics, and Law and Global Health. With medicine gearing towards whole-person care and societal factors affecting health, this convention is the perfect venue to showcase AdZU-SOM graduates and their effect on the region’s development.

All AdZU-SOM submissions were selected for oral presentation, the students chosen among hundreds who applied for a chance to deliver relevant research results.

Ms Fabian will exhibit the findings of the paper entitled “Value Formation as an Impact of Community Experiential Learning: the AdZU-SOM experience.” This paper details the AdZU-SOM’s ground-breaking curriculum and the impact of its community rotations on student values. Mr Remegia and Mr Apolinario will present the paper “Transformative Medical Education through Experiential Learning.” This research relates the triple helix curriculum employed by the AdZU-SOM, allowing students to learn in context while accruing social accountability. Both papers were developed with the guidance of Dr. Pascualito Concepcion and Dr. Rex Samson who served as their advisers.

This is the first time students of the AdZU-SOM are presenting to an international audience, and illustrates that the caliber of the students can rival that of other world-renowned medical schools.
